Auburn's inaugural Juneteenth Celebration

Rhoda Overstreet-Wilson, one of the organizers of Auburn's first Juneteenth Celebration, went to her first Juneteenth in Syracuse. Now, she says, Auburn is ready for its own.

State Sen. John A. DeFrancisco will be in attendance, as will Assemblyman Gary Finch, Legislator Keith Batman, Mayor Michael Quill, Harriet Tubman great-great-grandniece Pauline Johnson Copes, community leader Gwen Webber-Mcleod, and Christina Cornell, representing U.S. Rep. John Katko. Katko has also sent a video message that will be played at Auburn Public Theater throughout the day. Funding for the event is provided through DeFrancisco's Live Events in Cayuga County Program and the Harriet Tubman Center for Justice & Peace. A Juneteenth flag will be unveiled and displayed at the ceremony.
