An Auburn-based organization centered on benefiting young women will hold a clothing drive for professional attire Saturday. The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Beverly L. Smith Empowerment Organization, which is meant to connect young women to mentorship opportunities, break down barriers to professional success and provide college scholarships, initiative CEO and founder Melody R. Smith Johnson said. The drive will be held in front of Auburn Public Theater on Exchange Street. It will accept new or gently used size 0-18 professional clothing that can be worn at job interviews or at work such as suits, tops, bottoms, professional dresses, professional jewelry and handbags. ... Rhoda Overstreet-Wilson, one of the organizers of Auburn's first Juneteenth Celebration, went to her first Juneteenth in Syracuse. Now, she says, Auburn is ready for its own. ... State Sen. John A. DeFrancisco will be in attendance, as will Assemblyman Gary Finch, Legislator Keith Batman, Mayor Michael Quill, Harriet Tubman great-great-grandniece Pauline Johnson Copes, community leader Gwen Webber-Mcleod, and Christina Cornell, representing U.S. Rep. John Katko. Katko has also sent a video message that will be played at Auburn Public Theater throughout the day. Cayuga Centers has announced the promotion and addition of several staff members: ... The agency has also added Melody Smith (Johnson) as its human resources director, Susan Ofstein as director of its training department, and Daniel Ofstein as director of support services — operations. The human services agency, headquartered in Auburn, serves children, families and individuals through counseling, residential and support services.
